The Blessing of Doubt | This week my favorite Christian author, Federick Buechner, died. Reflecting on his long life and career filled me with gratitude. I picked up his book, The Magnificent Defeat, in my twenties and it changed my life. There wasn’t a better writer on the planet and Buechner applied his literarily talent to plumbing the mysteries of faith. In doing so, he never shied away from doubt. In fact, he saw it as an essential part of faith. “Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith,” he wrote. “They keep it awake and moving.” If you’ve never read Buechner (or if you have!) I recommend reading this fitting tribute: Doubt Be Not Proud. While we’re on the topic of doubt, let me recommend our resource on the topic. Dealing with Doubt is an 18-page resource designed to help you address spiritual doubt in your own life and ministry, or to walk alongside another as they struggle with doubt. The articles in this download don’t demonize doubt but rather equip you to lead and flourish in the presence of doubt. |
