SALE SCRUTINY: Since the announcement that one of the country’s largest insurance companies planned to buy Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, Blue Cross and community leaders have touted the $2.5 billion deal as a way to bring new health technologies and expanded services to 1.9 million customers. This week, however, Blue Cross officials might face a tougher audience.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Nine seconds after Asia Davis called 911 to report that her drug-addled boyfriend hit her in her New Orleans apartment and stole her phone, a police supervisor downgraded the call to a nonemergency. Now the boyfriend stands accused of killing Davis, illustrating the consequences of an understaffed Police Department and its longstanding practice of underplaying domestic violence complaints.
