Did Barbie paint the town pink?

Good Morning Voornaam,

Before we dive into the world of movies and childhood nostalgia, make a note to listen to the latest episode of Ghost Wrap. Brought to you by Mazars, I covered Spur, Adcock Ingram, Bidvest, Bidcorp, NEPI Rockcastle, DRDGOLD, Harmony Gold, BHP and Sasol. You'll find it here>>>

There are a couple of important events to add to your calendars this week. Both of them happen to be on Thursday. The first is at midday and features Curro on Unlock the Stock. This gives you a wonderful opportunity to ask questions directly to the management team. Attendance is free thanks to A2X provided you register at this link>>>

The second is at 2pm on Thursday, with Tony Cotrupe from the US joining a bizval webinar to talk about the importance of strategic planning for small business owners. This is a fantastic opportunity for entrepreneurs to ask questions to a highly experienced US expert with extensive advisory experience. Places are limited so don't waste time before registering at this link>>>

Disney and Yum! Brands

Disney is anything but yummy rig ht now, with the stock price continuing to get butchered based on really poor performance in the business and some highly questionable content strategies. At Yum! Brands, things are looking far better, mainly because the company sticks to its knitting (or Zinger Wings for that matter).

To get the latest insights on both companies in a fun-filled podcast, listen to Episode 139 of Magic Markets here>>>

The business of nostalgia

In her latest piece for Ghost Mail, Dominique Olivier taps into her love of the film industry and brings us news on how Barbie fared at the box office and what this means for Mattel. This was also a good opportunity to talk about arch-rival Hasbro and how that company thinks about the movie industry and making more money from its intellectual property. I guarantee that you'll learn something interesting in this article>>>

Grindrod and STADIO are both winners

We've seen some very strong results on the local market recently, with Grindrod and STADIO as two of the latest examples. Grindrod is a great example of an industrials play that is doing beautifully in this inflationary environment, although there is still margin pressure coming through. At STADIO, the tertiary education group has guided solid HEPS growth and has now pulled well ahead of its education sector peers on a year-to-date share price view.

We also saw news from AngloGold with a newly-mothballed mine that keeps losing money, Capital & Regional with the results of the capital raise and Northam Platinum with detailed results that laid bare the losses on the Royal Bafokeng Platinum adventure.

Stars under a clou dy sky

Friday was dominated by Jerome Powell's speech at Jackson Hole, where he reiterated the Fed's inflation target of 2%. This suggests that tighter monetary policy is here for longer. He poetically ended his speech by saying "we are guided by stars under a cloudy sky," summing up the uncertainty on the path ahead.

It was a volatile day for currencies, with TreasuryONE noting that the metrics for a risk-off move are currently in play. Gold moved lower, yields in the US increased and the stock market was red. If that continues into this week, it could be a rough few days for the rand.

Have a productive start to your week!

Ghost Bites (AngloGold | Capital & Regional | Grindrod | Northam Platinum | STADIO)

Grindrod and STADIO released really good numbers. Northam Platinum gave full details on impairments. AngloGold put a mine on care and maintenance. Growthpoint took a big piece of the Capital & Regional equity raise.

Is it a film? Is it a very long advert? Do shareholders really care either way? And perhaps most of all, is Mattel actually going to make more money thanks to Barbie?

Ghost Global: the business of nostalgia
Knowledge is power when it comes to using structured products

From a specialised, exotic investment tool, they are now mainstream, and financial advisers are now more comfortable about investing in them on behalf of clients.

Disney really has lost the plot when it comes to new content, with the theme parks now also under pressure. At Yum! Brands, simply executing on a proven formula is working. Get the latest insights on both companies in this podcast.

There's a positive undertone to this episode, with decent results from Adcock Ingram and really strong numbers from Spur, Bidvest, Bidcorp and NEPI Rockcastle. The mining houses can't say the same.
