Plus: What saved this USU basketball player’s life, Michelle Obama's attitude about marriage and have you had a glass of water today?🚰
Good morning, Utah Today readers! Here’s today’s forecast: 🌤️ 17 – 34° in Logan | ❄️ 10% chance 🌤️ 25 – 39° in Salt Lake City 🌥️ 33 – 46° in St. George | 💧 20% chance I have an important question for all of you: Where does “Southern Utah” begin and end? I’ve lived in Utah my whole life, and personally, I think as soon as you see strange rock formations, you’re there. But I’m from Salt Lake, so my opinion might not matter. I asked Hanna Seariac her opinion, and she said, “It needs to fit the following criteria: You need to see red sand, no people and no sign of gas stations for miles.” I have also been on work trips with colleagues, who are not from Utah, who consider Vernal to be “Southern Utah,” but I think that’s too liberal of a definition. One thing we can all agree on is that Bluff, Kanab and St. George all belong to Southern Utah. Tell me: What do you think? Respond to this email and let me know. By the way: In yesterday’s email, I asked how the first two days of “2022” were going for you. I meant to ask about “2023.” Let this be a reminder to sign all your checks with the new year! Also on our minds: What saved this USU basketball player’s life, Michelle Obama has the right attitude about marriage and have you had a glass of water today? |

| | Bryan Kohberger agreed to be extradited to Idaho on Tuesday during the latest court appearance for the 28-year-old Pennsylvania man accused of killing four University of Idaho students in November. Charges were filed Thursday against Kohberger, who was arrested Friday morning on four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Ethan Chapin, 20; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21. All were found dead in a home in the small college town of Moscow, Idaho, on Nov. 13. Kohberger was also charged with one count of felony burglary. | For the first time in 100 years, Congress failed to elect a House speaker on the first try. What stood in between Rep. Kevin McCarthy and being speaker of the House? Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona. Biggs doesn’t want the position for himself, but he’s willing to stick his neck out there in order to oust McCarthy because he thinks McCarthy is too much a part of “the establishment.” He ran against McCarthy in November with McCarthy being 30 votes short of the 218 he needed to win. According to Biggs, this was evidence that McCarthy lacked the support to unify Republicans in the house. Read more about Rep. Biggs and his unusual path to congress here.
