LSU's 4-2 football team has some issues, the biggest of which is special teams. They haven't, in a word, been special. Our Sheldon Mickles took a deep dive inside the numbers to find out how many negative plays have piled up in the first six games. He also looks at what coach Brian Kelly and much criticized special teams coordinator Brian Polian can do to try to make them better. If that happens for LSU, that'll be good news. For now, there is legitimate good news for the Tigers, as Kelly announced on Wednesday's SEC coaches teleconference that starting left tackle Will Campbell is expected to play Saturday at Florida (6 p.m. CDT, ESPN). Campbell left LSU's Friday walk-through practice for last Saturday's Tennessee game in an ambulance and spent the weekend in the hospital, making this a remarkable comeback if he can indeed pull it off. If Campbell comes back, one of his chief tasks will be to protect quarterback Jayden Daniels' blind side. Daniels has been a conundrum to figure out, both seeming to hold back and hold together LSU's offense at the same time. I take a look at Daniels and the LSU quarterback situation in my column, and consider the past, present and future of this all-important positon. Joe Burrow, a former LSU quarterback you may have heard of, is returning to the Caesars Superdome on Sunday for the first time since leading the Tigers past Clemson in the CFP National Championship Game in January 2020. Now Burrow is quarterbacking the Cincinnati Bengals, who like the Saints are 2-3 and desperate for a win to get back to .500. The game is set for noon on CBS. I wonder if Joe brought any victory cigars this time? And finally, if you're looking well down the road past the LSU-Florida and Bengals-Saints games, we have the Tigers' latest bowl projections. As a journalist I do not root for LSU, but if the Tigers are to make a bowl I can for selfish reasons hope that they make it to the Las Vegas Bowl. Well, that's all we've got for now. Thank you for inviting us into your inbox — it's really nice. Roomy. Room for an LSU sports newsletter every day, which is fortunate because that's what we've got. Until next time, Scott Rabalais |
