Dear Reader,

Happy New Year and I hope that the holiday has brought you at least a little relief.

With the new Covid-19 variant pushing up infections and Boris Johnson exploring how to tighten restrictions, the successful rollout of coronavirus vaccinations grows more critical by the day. There was good news this morning, with the first injection of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, which you can read about here. However, challenges remain. In this excellent piece, Robert Mendick explains in detail exactly what those challenges are and the efforts to overcome them.

The New Year is typically a time for economic predictions. As Jeremy Warner writes, Covid-19 made fools of all last year’s attempts, but this year’s forecasts are all the more interesting. Jeremy takes a look at how the pandemic will change our economy, whether optimism is in order and offers a reminder of the one economic factor that can never be predicted and respects neither politics nor borders.

It might be cold and dark outside, but January is as good a time as any to break old habits and build new ones. The Telegraph has launched a January Health Reset and as part of it, Dr Stuart Farrimond has drawn together 15 bitesized changes you can make to your day for a healthier routine. They’re small enough that you can begin right away.

Christmas was not the same for many, perhaps most of us, this year but not always for the reason you might think. Hattie Garlick awoke on Christmas morning to discover that her home was flooded and with more water pouring in from the surrounding fields. She retells the dramatic story and the lesson it taught her about community.
