On Monday, dubbed "National Price Hike Day", Britons were hit by price rises totaling more than 4.5bn, or 240 per household.

Customers now must pay extra for their council tax, water supply, NHS prescriptions, TV licences and much more. But don't let price increases make a fool of you – our explainer looks at what has become more expensive, and the ways to get around it.

This week also heralds the start of the new tax year. In general, taxpayers will have more money in their pocket after increases to allowances come into force. Those selling shares or who own buy-to-let properties, however, will be hit hard. Read our guide to all the changes here.

Derek Etherton said about My summer with Tandem: how using a hipster bank caused me seven months of heartache: "Living in Malaga, hating Spanish (rip off) banks, having pensions and other income paid into my Lloyds UK bank, finding Revolut during the past 12 months has been a godsend."

David Andrews said about We're told to plan for longer lives, but robbed of our wealth when we do: "The trouble is that governments are endlessly greedy for money, so while they'd like you to work and save so that they don't have to spend on you, if you do accumulate capital then they'd like a slice of that too."

E Bee said about Beatles fans waste thousands travelling to the wrong station: "You would think that the UK Tourist Office would put taxpayers' money to better use and produce guides for the millions of Beatles fans around the world. Same for a punk tour and a Sixties tour."
