Cheap(er) gas: Hitting the road for a little Memorial Day travel? Buckle in, because gasoline prices are through the roof. Here’s some places around New Orleans where gas is (comparatively) cheap.
Restoring the Shrine's shine: Some big changes could be coming to the Shrine on Airline. As you know, the baseball stadium in Metairie is no longer home to a baseball team. So, to keep the place relevant, Jefferson Parish officials took another step this week in a proposed multi-million-dollar makeover. (Don't hold your breath for pro baseball...)
Gun bills galore: There was another mass shooting at a school this week, this time in Texas. Here in Louisiana, a state that leans heavily toward gun rights, the Legislature is plowing through a spate of gun-related bills. Will the deadly Texas shootings have any impact on those discussions? (Our cartoonist, Walt Handelsman, offers this take on the political debate.)
Debate shaper indeed: In St. Tammany, a book that went home with some 5th graders for summer reading has created a bit of a stir. The book's rather ironic title? "Shaping the Debate: Defining and Discussing Free Speech." Read about it here.
(Toothy) things that go bump: There have been a number of gator sightings in recent weeks. But this might be the first “bumping.” A diver at a marina in New Orleans was “bumped” by a 7-footer, prompting warnings. Rest easy, friends, the wildlife experts remind us that actual attacks are very rare.
