The Christian Post won four awards at this year's Evangelical Press Association Christian Media Convention, which was attended by Christian ministries, nonprofits and media organizations from across the nation. CP's executive editor, Dr. Richard Land, took home second place for Editorial with his "The Will Smith event: Why it matters" piece, which addressed Smith's infamous slap that was seen by a billion people worldwide. CP's exclusive 10-episode podcast series, "Generation Indoctrination: Inside the Transgender Battle," won second place in the Podcast category. CP reporter Ian Giatti's "Texas megachurch glorifies the incarnation in 'Gift of Christmas' extravaganza" won fourth place in the Critical Review category, and CP reporter Ryan Foley's "NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom shares the cost of his human rights advocacy" took fourth place in the Interview Article Category. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin donated his first-quarter salary to Good News Jail & Prison Ministry, which his office recognized as "an organization dedicated to supplying faith-based resources for jails and prisons in the Commonwealth of Virginia and worldwide." The ministry praised Youngkin's $43,750 donation, saying it will help "bring the Gospel to inmates in over 350 jails and prisons." The Council of State Governments reports that the governor of Virginia receives an annual salary of $175,000. Youngkin released a statement explaining, "I pledged to serve without accepting a salary to support Virginians in every way I can." Read more.
Despite more than 75% of self-identified Christians in 27 states with no meaningful regulation of payday loans believing it's a sin to lend money in a way that harms the borrower financially, more than a third of them say they have obtained such loans, according to new research from Lifeway. The online survey found that even though a growing number of Christians see these predatory loans as helpful, most support stricter regulations and church interventions. The short-term, high-interest payday loan industry is expected to reach $42.6 billion globally by 2028. Read more.
Jamie Thomas, 43, was arrested Sunday following months of protesting against Virginia Beach Pastor John Blanchard after the embattled megachurch leader, who faced solicitation of sex with minor charges, brought stalking charges against him. Video shows Thomas, his wife, and son protesting outside the church, with Thomas using a megaphone to declare, "John Blanchard is a pedophile." Minutes later, Thomas was taken into custody by three police officers. Blanchard was arrested in late 2021 in a sting operation aimed at capturing people seeking sexual relations with minors online. Thirty-three Christians were killed by armed terrorists in Nigeria in an attack that started on Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning. Area residents report that Fulani herdsmen and other armed terrorists invaded the predominantly Christian Runji village in Zangon Kataf County at 10 p.m. on Saturday, with the Rev. Jacob Kwashi, bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Zonkwa, decrying "the handiwork of the evil ones." Read more.
Police in Kenya have arrested the leader of a cult group for the deaths of four followers who starved to death in a forest after he allegedly instructed them to fast to "meet Jesus." Eleven other followers have been hospitalized, with two in critical condition. A mass grave in the forest is believed to contain the bodies of other victims. Read more.
