Good morning from Atlanta, where yours truly is here to cover Saturday's SEC Championship Game between Texas and Georgia. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. on ABC, the centerpiece of Championship Saturday. More on that later. You may be wondering about the title of today's newsletter. Bear with me, though "Star Trek" fans will know what I'm talking about. That headline is the title of perhaps the most celebrated "Star Trek" episode, about the Enterprise crew finding a time portal with no idea what is going to happen when they step through. That's kind of the way the transfer portal is for LSU football. Players keep jumping through, like bunch of crazed Dr. McCoys in the episode, but no one knows what LSU team will emerge from the portal on the other side. The transfer portal doesn't actually open until Monday, but players keep declaring that they're entering. It's a scary time for LSU fans, but bear in mind that there are players entering the portal at schools all over the country, too. I promise, some of them will want to come play for LSU. LSU men's basketball player Jalen Reed isn't in the transfer portal, but he is on the shelf after a season-ending ACL injury. Coach Matt McMahon has an update. I'm still shaking my head over the LSU women's 94-88 overtime victory Thursday night over Stanford. When the Cardinal went up 80-75 with 23 seconds left in regulation, Stanford had a 99.3% chance of winning. Instead the Tigers tied it up and pulled away in the extra five minutes. Our Reed Darcey has an anatomy of the miraculous comeback. Former LSU women's basketball star Angel Reese has been named one of the New York Times' 63 most stylish people. Good for her, but she's got nothing on Kim Mulkey's game outfits. And why 63, NYT? Now to the SEC Championship Game. I've got a column on how the expanded CFP may ultimately be a fatal blow to conference title games, four keys to the game between the Longhorns and Bulldogs and a score prediction you can move on like the game has already been played. Actually, you bet against my prediction you're probably making a better bet. Until next time, live long and prosper. Scott Rabalais |
