Looking Back at a Conversation with Sam Zell

It was with shock and sadness that we heard on Thursday morning about the passing away of one of commercial real estate industry's true giants, Sam Zell. (There's a lovely memorial video posted here.) To pay tribute to him, we wanted to rerun a conversation with Zell that our publication, then known as National Real Estate Investor, published in 2012, when the industry was still recovering from the Great Financial Crisis. In the piece, Zell touched on how he made investment decisions, what he thought of the political climate in the U.S. at the time and his take on how the industry handled distressed debt during the previous downturn.
