Dear subscribers,
Tuesday night, students and community members gathered to hold a vigil for victims of a U.S-led coalition of airstrikes in Aleppo, Syria, and Mosul, Iraq. A research team in the College of Engineering created a tarnish-proof silver film whose properties allow for various uses such as high-tech screens. Senior center fielder Kelly Christner lifted the Michigan softball team past the Chippewas, 2-0, en route to the Wolverinesâ ninth-straight victory. The Statement reflects on the history of the University's Block 'M' and the politics of making art.
All the best,

A research team in the University of Michigan College of Engineering succeeded in creating a tarnish-proof silver film whose properties allow for various uses such as high-tech screens. The teamâs paper, published last Monday, details the filmâs versatility.
As the silver film is ultra-thin, it can be used for displays such the touch screens on cell phones. The film is also transparent, which is why it can be directly applied to solar cells or organic LED displays â increasing efficiencies as the film allows more light to enter solar cells and to leave the LEDs.
Christner's production lifted No. 20 Michigan past the Chippewas, 2-0, in a midweek pitcherâs duel en route to the Wolverinesâ ninth-straight victory.

Restlessness and curiosity have always been incentives for my practice as a dance maker, performer, improviser and educator. Itâs looking like itâs high time to let righteous indignation find its way back into my choreographic considerations.
For more than a century, the University of Michiganâs logo â the block âMâ â has been an Ann Arbor staple, emblazoned on everything from the Big House scoreboard to the graduation-party cakes of high-school seniors.
Despite slight modifications over the years, the simple, maize-colored âMâ set on a blue field has symbolized the Universityâs historically dominant Athletic Department for more than 100 years. And in recent years, the famous âMâ has been branded to represent the entire institution.
