The danger of nuclear war: Why the WSWS needs your financial support

This week's hearings before the Senate Foreign Relations committee reveal the political motivations behind the drive to censor the Internet--and why it is so important to expand the readership and influence of the WSWS.

As Andre Damon writes in today's perspective, the hearings involved top senators and military generals discussing the possibility of nuclear war. One senator worried that Trump "is so unstable, is so volatile, has a decision-making process that is so quixotic, that he might order a nuclear weapons strike."

That such a possibility is discussed at the highest levels of the state is a symptom of a deep crisis of American and world capitalism. It does not arise out of the twisted mind of Donald Trump. A quarter century of militarist violence, which has destroyed the lives of millions, is developing into a global conflict that threatens the future of humanity itself. Trump merely expresses the criminality of the financial elite in its most naked form.

The financial oligarchy is aware that its power rests on quicksand. Three people in the United States control more wealth than half the population. The ruling class and all its political representatives are united on a policy of militarism and social plunder.

This is why the giant technology companies are trying to block access to the WSWS and control the Internet.
