Dear Reader,

It is a historic moment that many thought might never come and others said couldn’t be done. The UK will leave behind the final vestiges of its EU membership in seven days' time and do so with a negotiated trade agreement. Allister Heath sets out the three key questions to ask of the deal before deciding whether it is a good one or not.

Meanwhile, James Crisp in Brussels walks us through some of the details, explaining how Lord Frost turned the negotiations on their head. And Allison Pearson, I'm sure like many of you, expresses relief that this is over, once and for all, and that these grim negotiations are at an end.

As ever, you can keep up with the very latest on our live blog and do head to Telegraph.co.uk for up-to-the-minute analysis and reaction on this momentous day.

This is going to be a strange Christmas and, although I am sure you will all be making the best of the situation, I am aware that millions of people will, sadly, be alone. Dame Esther Rantzen, founder of The Silver Line, has written us this moving piece explaining that she will be spending the festive period without her grandchildren for the first time. I'm sure it will resonate with many of you.

One of the activities Dame Esther suggests to lift spirits is to take part in a quiz. Well, we have a huge treat for you this Christmas-time. It’s our very own interactive Christmas quiz, which can be played in person or over a video call, and has 600 possible questions, so it can be played more than once. It is great fun and a definite recommendation for tomorrow's entertainment.

The biggest Christmas television hit of last year was Gavin and Stacey: The Christmas special. In this delightful article, Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, who play the eponymous hero and heroine, discuss their first meeting, immediate chemistry and 2020. The couple will be reunited tomorrow at noon, on BBC Radio Wales.

With best wishes for a merry Christmas,

Chris
