BYU's game against Texas Tech in Provo today will be historic, no matter the outcome. It will be the first time the Red Raiders play in the Beehive State. It will also be the first time the two teams have played each other since 1940 — a mere 83 years ago.
As Utah’s hunt gets underway, here’s what tracking tells us about the estimated 350K deer that live among us
Leading up to Utah’s general deer hunt (it starts today!) the Deseret News’ Marjorie Cortez spoke with Blair Stringham, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources migration initiative coordinator.
Deer tend to travel the pathways taught to them by their mothers and taught to those does by their mothers, which has been verified by data collected from GPS units attached to collars.
This data helps Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists understand deer and their movements.
By the numbers:
Around 1,000 deer are collared across the state
Utah has 26 hunt units
There were 10,000 motor vehicle-deer crashes in 2012
20,000 deer are killed during the annual deer hunts
The average lifespan of a deer in Utah is four to five years

With USC headed to the Big Ten next year and Utah going to the Big 12, it may be the last clash in a while between these two opponents, and there have been some great ones in years past.
USC star quarterback Caleb Williams may be the best player the Utes will face all season. Headlining the nation’s No. 2 scoring offense, which averages 47.3 points per game, the junior quarterback has thrown for 288 passing yards per contest.
What they said:
“We don’t measure wins. We don’t circle games. The only game that you can measure is the last one and we’re not there.” — Williams
“(Williams was) good last year. He’s good this year. He leads that offense ... he’s great at throwing the ball. He’s great at staying alive in the pocket. Very strong as a runner. So I mean, there’s a reason he was the Heisman Trophy winner last year and one of the favorites to win it this year.” — Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley
“There’s some big challenges on the horizon and we’ll see how we hold up, but I think we’ve done some good things in the secondary.” — Utah coach Kyle Whittingham
