Jesus said that it is not what you put in your mouth, but what comes out of your mouth, that makes you unclean. Conversely, if what comes out of your mouth is uplifting, it can be a reflection of your cleanliness. What you say can encourage another, it can teach, it can make music, and it can create joy, peace, and love. In other words, to move closer to God, it is what you create with your mouth, not what you eat, that matters. Likewise, there is a void that feels like a mouth inside of each of us. We all feel it. And most of us try to fill it with something mundane. These attempts to ‘fill the void’ often take the form addictions such as food, entertainment, material success, or drugs. But attempting to fill the void with worldly pleasures is trying, spiritually, to eat our way to true satiation. Those attempts are doomed to fail because the void isn’t a mouth, it’s a portal into the divine mystery, and true satisfaction, true creativity, depends not upon what we put into our inner void, but upon what we bring out of it. The void can never be filled because it is infinite. It isn't meant to be filled. That is why attempting to fill it with worldly pleasures just leads to chasing more and more and more. It is in fact, not a void at all, but a source. It’s a wellspring from which, if we look closely, living water flows. We can’t even fill this void with God, because it is the source in which we find God. The Kingdom of Heaven inside each of us is born from this deep void. And it only feels like a void when we have turned away from the call of Wonder. Once we stop trying to fill it, and find the courage to peer into it, then, suddenly, we feel the ponderous joyful weight of the depth of this infinity. This singularity inside each of us, once we finally face it, turns out not to be a void at all, but a magical portal into the divine. And once we know this, we have finally found the true source of the living water of which the Christ spoke. The universe began with a divine singularity, out of which, via the big bang, all of creation flowed. A reflection of that singularity lies deep within your core, a potential primordial expansion of creativity, just waiting for you to trigger the bang. “Inner emptiness is not a void to be filled with comforts; — Alan Watts This reflection explores themes addressed in my forthcoming book, The Sovereign Artist.
