The Easiest-Ever Hydroponic Garden

No soil, no toil, just lots of salad! Get 228 years of garden knowledge from your friends at The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
Dear Garden Grower,

It is said that agriculture sparked civilization as we know it today. Little did our ancestors know that domesticating grains would one day evolve into everything from rooftop gardens to grade-school science experiments to entire industries. Despite the long history humans have with gardening, most of us probably think of it the same way our forebears did: soil, water, sunshine, and seeds. Mix those together the right way, at the right time, and you can spend months eating fresh produce straight from your backyard.

However, there is one centuries-old method of gardening that works without soil. With hydroponic gardening, plants get their nutrients through roots that dangle in a container of water-based solution, and they absorb oxygen and exhaust CO 2 through the portion of the roots that are suspended above the water. It’s simple, silent, cordless, and relatively inexpensive. In fact, two Almanac editors tried the system and the initial equipment investment was approximately $100— although most of the supplies are reusable, so the cost actually decreases over time. Not to mention you get free salad every day for about six weeks!

So what works in a hydroponic garden? You can use a mix of greens to create some really colorful, textural mixtures. Bibb and romaine lettuces work. Kale, Swiss chard, arugula, leafy amaranth, lemon and Thai basil, sorrel, and nasturtium all grow well, too.

How hard is it to grow a hydroponic garden? Any garden takes some work to get started, but once you get this one growing, it’s fairly simple to maintain. In fact, once your seedlings start to emerge, you can rest easy for a few weeks. You may need to add some nutrient solution about a month in, and it’s helpful to replace and refresh the nutrients every so often.

The best part comes about five weeks after germination. Your lettuce plants will have leaves that you can begin to harvest. Take the outermost fully expanded leaves, always leaving the innermost three or four young leaves unharvested. When your plants get old (about 10 to 12 weeks after emergence), they can get tough and bitter (but really, who among us doesn’t). This is normal. Compost your plants, feed your regular garden with the nutrient solution and start all over!

What about pests? What about sunlight? Nutrients? What equipment do you need? What are the next winning lottery numbers? You can find the answers to all your questions (except the lottery numbers, sorry) when you join The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club today! This is the same Almanac that farmers, gardeners, homesteaders, and other smart people have relied upon for over two centuries. Plus, you get a bundle of FREE GIFTS and more in the The 2020 Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Guide, which comes with your membership.

Out of the Soil, Up to the Sky
Whether you’re working in a terrestrial garden or growing your plants without soil in a hydroponic garden, there is one aspect that remains the same. Plants will always reach toward the sky. And as agriculture connects us to our human history, it also connects us to the celestial movements. We plant and harvest according to the seasons. We enjoy juicy tomatoes at the height of summer, and simmer thick root vegetable stews in the depths of winter.

But did you know that some gardens go even further in celebrating our place in the universe? Astronomical gardens are ancient. The most well-known is Stonehenge in England, with its alignment to the rising and setting Sun on the solstices. Clearly, most of us aren’t going to erect 25-foot-tall stones in our home garden, but you can create your own astro-garden. There is only one simple rule: Anything is acceptable as long as it is true to the sky.

Your astro-garden can be in the sun or shade, on flat ground or sloping terrain. You can make it any size or way you wish. For example, you could plot your garden in the shape of a constellation or spiral galaxy. Or use a single-color flower to represent a planet.

If you wish to build something more elaborate use wide stones, paths, or garden beds to mark the alignments with the rising and setting Sun. Align garden beds with the four cardinal directions by adding a stonework centerpiece. And if you really do want to go all out and recreate a life-sized version of Stonehenge, send us pictures! Whatever you choose, you’re about to open a sky full of possibilities for everyone who experiences your astronomical garden.
Create Your Own "Treehouse"
Gardens without soil. Gardens in the sky. How about something normal now? Like planting trees in your living room? Let’s go with a palm tree. Or maybe a cypress. Pine would be nice. Believe it or not, this isn’t as far-fetched as it seems.

There’s nothing new about bringing some green into your home. Foliage plants have been lurking in the dark corners for a while. Today, though, we are learning to appreciate how much they add to our indoor environment. And the right species of palm, cypress, pine, banana, and many other trees can live happily in an overheated apartment or a chilly farmhouse. They can even forgive a certain amount of neglect, although they do respond very positively to a little nurturing.

You can find all sorts of tips for planting, watering, and fertilizing these majestic beauties in The 2020 Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Guide. Most importantly, those tips come with plenty of cool design ideas to make your indoor jungle a thing of wonder and amazement.
