In today's newsletter, takeaways from latest Trump/Harris rallies, Michigan among 3 new states with E. coli cases and Michigan football beats in-state rival MSU.

Election Day takes place next week

My mailbox is going to feel so empty without all the political ads once Election Day has come and gone. Speaking of which, be aware fake Donald Trump ads suggesting Ann Arbor voters should approve two city election reform proposals are being circulated.

Early in-person voting centers for the Nov. 5 election are now open through Sunday, Nov. 3 in cities and townships across Michigan. Find out where and when to vote here.

Michigan’s third-largest city has decided against verifying mail ballots early, which could potentially make receiving results slower.

The economy is a political hot potato, but voters just see bigger grocery bills

On paper, the economy looks good: Inflation is down. Unemployment rates are low. And the stock market is booming. But to voters, the data points don’t matter. Sticker shock does.

A majority of voters believe the economy is on the wrong track, a recent Harvard-Harris poll found, and 62% characterized it as weak. A September poll from the Pew Research Center found 81% of registered voters said the economy will be very important to their vote. And 9 in 10 voters are likely heading to the polls thinking about the economy.

For some Michigan voters, according to a MLive survey, the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris is about more than just matters of policy – it’s about the integrity and moral character of the candidates, and worries about the “future of democracy.”

Beyoncé bashing and Gen Z: 4 takeaways from latest Trump, Harris Michigan rallies

Stopping by the swing state: Both presidential candidates spent time in Michigan rallying supporters this weekend in the final days before the Nov. 5 election. Former President Donald Trump hosted a rally in Traverse City on Friday, Oct. 25, and Novi on Saturday, Oct. 26. Vice President Kamala Harris and former First Lady Michelle Obama rallied supporters Saturday in Kalamazoo. Here are four takeaways from their visits.

Not done yet: Kamala Harris will be in Ann Arbor today with running mate Tim Walz, this time for a “When We Vote We Win” rally. Republican Vice Presidential nominee JD Vance will deliver remarks during rallies Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Saginaw Township and near Holland.

In Lansing: The November election could flip the ideological majority on Michigan’s Supreme Court. The election itself is nonpartisan, but the candidates are nominated by the Democratic and Republican parties.

To know: Michigan is among three new states where people have been sickened by an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burger. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that 26 new illnesses have been reported, bringing the total to 75.

Ahead of the holiday season, West Michigan doctors are urging parents to be aware of the high likelihood that children under 2-years-old will contract a respiratory illness with potentially serious consequences.

In weather: With the long-lasting dry weather, now almost all of Michigan is in some level of abnormal dryness or drought. Here’s the latest map.

Michigan pulls out several trick plays to beat in-state rival Michigan State

Michigan football took home the Paul Bunyan Trophy Saturday, battling back from a pair of road losses and taking down their in-state rival MSU in a hard-fought contest that ended in a short-lived brawl at midfield.

For the NFL: Five different players scored touchdowns in the first half -- a franchise record -- and Kalif Ramond made it six on a 90-yard punt return to open the second half, powering the Detroit Lions to a 52-14 bloodletting of the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Ford Field. They have now won five straight games to improve to 6-1 on the season, their best start since 1956.

In high school sports: The MHSAA has released its high school football pairings and brackets for the 2024 playoffs. Here is a look at the eight 11-player football divisions and two 8-player football divisions.
