End of an era — how the Pac-12 came undone

The demise of the Pac-12 last fall sent shockwaves through the college sports world. The internet is filled with countless Pac-12 obituaries and nostalgic lists of the league’s great moments and the top athletes in each sport and at each school, etc. The league’s fall has been repeatedly second-guessed, lamented and analyzed as if it were a crime scene.

Who saw this coming over the last century? As ESPN noted, this was a league whose name was always a count-up, not a count-down — Big-5, Big-6, Pac-8, Pac-10, Pac-12. Now: Pac-0.

USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon will join the Big Ten. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah will join the Big 12. Stanford and Cal will join the Atlantic Coast Conference. Oregon State and Washington State, with no good options, signed up with the West Coast Conference in 12 sports for a two-year term.

It’s the end of an era.

Gov. Cox and challengers disagree over ‘Disagree Better’

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox’s Republican and Democratic challengers share one attack in common, they disagree with his “Disagree Better” campaign.

Former Utah GOP chair Carson Jorgensen said the governor’s emphasis on productive disagreement ignores the reality of irreconcilable ideological differences. State Rep. Phil Lyman, R-Blanding, framed the endeavor as a way to avoid taking stands on controversial issues. And state Rep. Brian King, D-Salt Lake City, felt Cox’s admonitions meant little during a legislative session dominated by a Republican supermajority.

But King said he is willing to appear in a disagree better style advertisement with the governor — like the one Cox filmed with his Democratic opponent in 2020 — under certain conditions.
