I have been working in the field of biological sex differences for more than 30 years, first as the CEO and president of the Society for Women’s Health Research and now as the senior vice president of Science and Health Policy for HealthyWomen. The idea that our biological sex impacts our health seems like such a simple concept. Unfortunately, it has proven to be anything but.
Biological sex, gender and gender identity, as well as race and other demographic characteristics, all play roles in women’s health. There are large data gaps in knowledge about everything from the right medication dosages for women’s bodies to how symptoms manifest in men and women.
It has been challenging to get researchers and practitioners, research and medical institutions and medication and device manufacturers to accept this. The journey toward sex and gender health equity in prevention, diagnosis and treatment is still ongoing. This book is the story of why it was—and still is—so important to do research specific to women.
When you are done reading this book, it is my hope that you will feel empowered to advocate for yourself if you are a woman patient or advocate for your woman partner, friend or family member. Told with humor, ferocity and passion, Sex Cells appeals to anyone interested in health, women’s rights, and public health policy.
