Frost Dates, Planting Bulbs, and What the Weather Means for Your Garden

If you haven’t experienced your first fall frost yet, it’s on the way. Find out when to expect colder temperatures as part of your Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Club Charter Membership.
Dear Weather Watcher,

Autumn is a time of transition, so it’s only fair to expect some big temperature fluctuations now and then.

This year, autumn officially begins at 3:50 a.m. on September 23, and the first fall frosts aren’t far behind. In fact, some places like Bismark, North Dakota, may already have seen their first frost.

Of course, the arrival of autumn and cooler weather doesn’t mean that gardening season is over. You can still plant a few crops, like turnips, spinach, and collards, in the southern reaches of the U.S. And winter wheat is an option in Area 2, across the center of the country. Just be warned that it takes only a light freeze to kill tender plants, and temperatures a mere 4 degrees below freezing may be widely destructive to most plants.

When are those first frost dates? Your local geography plays a big role, but generally speaking, if you live in these locations, it’s almost (or might already be) here:

  • The first frost in Mobile, Alabama, usually falls around November 29.
  • In Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, the first autumn frost is November 20, but it’s 2 weeks earlier, November 7, in Monroe, Louisiana.
  • Moving around the country, the first frost in Athens, Georgia, comes on November 4. In Lawton, Oklahoma, as well as Carlsbad, New Mexico, the first frost is on November 1. Eureka, California, has until November 15, while in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the date of the first fall frost is November 3.

Live in Omaha? Cedar Rapids? Somewhere else? You’ll have to take a look at the Old Farmer’s Almanac to find out when you can expect the first frost of the season. Don’t worry, though: You get a brand-new copy of the 2020 Almanac as part of your Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Club Charter Membership.

What You Need to Know About Planting Bulbs
Cool autumn temperatures might curtail your produce, but it’s the perfect time to think about planting bulbs so that your early spring garden is as gorgeous as a new copy of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. The crocus and daffodil both bloom in early spring and can grow well in partial shade.

If you need a good border plant, the tulip blooms in early spring and the grape hyacinth can bloom as early as late winter, while the bluebell appears in spring and can grow up to 20 inches tall. The Almanac has everything you need to know to successfully plant bulbs this fall, from the kind of soil they like to when you can expect to see the rewards of your planting efforts.
Why Is It So Cold—and So Warm?
Remember how unusual the weather seemed last winter? You may have heard your local weather reporter blame bitterly cold weather on the polar vortex. But what is that? The polar vortex is a fast-flowing jet stream of air that circles the North Pole about 20 miles above Earth’s surface, in the stratosphere.

A strong polar vortex keeps most of the frigid Arctic air in the polar region, resulting in mild winter temperatures in the middle latitudes of the eastern U.S. and in northern Europe and Asia. Under normal winter conditions, the polar vortex is strong enough to keep the coldest air bottled up in the north.

In recent winters, exceptionally mild temperatures far in the north have weakened the polar vortex and caused the jet stream to wobble. The once-trapped cold air then flows south, bringing icy temperatures to the U.S.

So, although it may seem counterintuitive, it’s that warmer weather in the northern regions that is responsible for record-breaking cold weather in the U.S.

Can we expect a polar vortex this winter? Will it be colder than normal? Or warmer? Find out more about the polar vortex and other weather phenomena, plus much more useful information, wit, and wisdom—and a bundle of BONUSES—with an Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Club Membership!
