When Louisa Lim was growing up in Hong Kong, the King of Kowloon's wonky calligraphy was everywhere.

He painted on the lampposts and postboxes, flyovers and electricity boxes — transforming the cityscape and becoming a legendary figure.

Lim's quest to find out more about this man and his legacy turned into an eight-year search.

"I was on a fool's mission," she says, "a journalistic road to nowhere, but once I started, I couldn't stop."
