Minnesota's high winds this spring spark a jump in green energy production. With a windier spring than usual, utility companies say wind turbines contributed more renewable energy. At the 18-member Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency, wind production was up 23 percent in the first four months of the year over the same period last year.
For decades, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe pressed the federal government to give back tracts of northern Minnesota land it wrongfully took from the tribe in the 1940s and 1950s. Now, Washington is close to returning nearly 12,000 acres. As they plan for the land’s future, tribal leaders say their fight has also helped strengthen bonds with the Cass County government.
