The Food and Drug Administration Tuesday authorized the first COVID-19 vaccine booster for children ages 5 to 11. The authorization makes all children in that age group who received their second shot at least five months ago eligible to receive a third shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The companies requested the authorization based on a small study that the companies and FDA said demonstrated a third shot is safe and can significantly boost antibody levels, countering waning immunity and providing added protection against the virus, including the more contagious omicron variant. Until now, only children ages 12 and older and adults were eligible for a booster.

Minnesota's high winds this spring spark a jump in green energy production. With a windier spring than usual, utility companies say wind turbines contributed more renewable energy. At the 18-member Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency, wind production was up 23 percent in the first four months of the year over the same period last year.
For decades, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe pressed the federal government to give back tracts of northern Minnesota land it wrongfully took from the tribe in the 1940s and 1950s. Now, Washington is close to returning nearly 12,000 acres. As they plan for the land’s future, tribal leaders say their fight has also helped strengthen bonds with the Cass County government.
