Ever wonder who’s been left out of art histories?
Ever wonder who’s been left out of art histories? Artist Ryan Preciado began to when he came across the name Manuel Sandoval, a Nicaraguan artisan who worked with modern design giants Frank Lloyd Wright and Rudolph Schindler. Carolina Miranda spoke with Preciado about his search for Sandoval’s creations and the resulting exhibition, now at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Meanwhile, Pedro Gadanho discusses why ecological art isn’t going away anytime soon (and shouldn’t), and Aaron Short has the story on two neighboring Bushwick galleries celebrating a decade of exhibiting emerging artists — quite a feat in New York City! And make sure to read Louis Bury’s insightful review of Kay Kasparhauser’s bio art exhibition. In News, arts funding took another hit when the NEA canceled its Challenge America grants for underserved communities, while a court order shut down Mexican artist Fabián Cháirez’s controversial exhibition, featuring suggestive imagery of queer priests and nuns. On the brighter side, the University of Virginia’s Fralin Museum of Art received a gift of 100 Haitian artworks. Haitian art seems to be having a well-deserved moment — let’s hope it continues. Finally, join Hyperallergic’s Editor-in-Chief Hrag Vartanian in conversation with Lee Quiñones, Wendy Olsoff, and Sean Corcoran on graffiti and the lasting legacy of artist Martin Wong at the Museum of the City of New York on Monday, March 10.
