GARBAGE OVERHAUL: The city is rebidding one of its major garbage collection contracts next month, a move that will likely spell the end of the current arrangement that divides the city in half and gives the work to two contractors. The change comes in response to problems with collections in Lakeview, Gentilly, New Orleans East and other downriver neighborhoods, but exactly what the new system will look like isn't entirely clear, reports Ben Myers.
CARJACKINGS CONTINUE: It's no secret that New Orleans has been experiencing a surge in carjackings during the pandemic. This weekend saw another wave of armed robberies of vehicles in city streets, including several Uptown around Tulane and Loyola universities. Homicides continue to occur in high numbers, including a fatal double shooting at a New Orleans East apartment complex on Sunday.
TWO SERVICES: Ann Rice, the "Interview with the Vampire" author who died last month, was buried Saturday at a private funeral at Lake Lawn Park. Also on Saturday, the late Lawrence Brooks, who was the oldest surviving World War II veteran when he died last month at 112, was honored during a funeral service at the National World War II Museum.
