| | Is the March For Our Lives in Washington DC and protests against guns the start of a new youth boom?
Every generation has its youth boom, a seven-year period when a generation finds its voice and changes the whole culture. Boomers had their's from 1964 to 1971 when their youth boom led to the anti-war movement, the women's movement, and the birth of the counterculture.Â
Our youngest generation, born from 2000 to 2017 are now entering their youth boom. This happens when the oldest members of a generation turn eighteen years of age and are seniors in High School. The first evidence of this is seen in their reaction to the shootings in Parkland, Florida and the high school students who are now leading a movement to change gun control laws. Hundreds of thousands of young people are expected to be in Washington DC this weekend to make their voice heard.
In this new "The Future Of...Podcast", Craig Kennet Miller, author of iKids: Parenting in the Digital Age and Boomer Spirituality: Seven values for the Second Half of Life, and Chris Wilterdink, co-author of Building Spiritual Muscle and author of Everyday Disciples: Covenant Discipleship with Youth unpack the emergence of Generation Z and look at youth booms past in the first of a four-part series on The New Youth Boom. Miller is the Director of Congregational Development at Discipleship Ministries and Wilterdink is Director of Young Peopleâs Ministries Program Development in the United States, at Discipleship Ministries.Listen Here |
