Dear Reader, This summer, I attended the Yiddish Vokh, an annual Yiddish retreat in the Berkshire Mountains. I loved every moment of this immersive experience, but one of my favorite things about this year’s retreat were the many kinder (children) who were there. Of the 150 attendees, 33 were under the age of 18. Yiddish-speaking children — babbling toddlers, chattering children, and loquacious teens — could be heard in the pool, at meals, and all around the retreat center. These kids may not know it yet, but they're the future of the Yiddish world. |
Sincerely, Rukhl Schaechter Yiddish Editor The Forward |
