The Sunday Round-Up | May 9, 2021 Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers out there but especially my mom who is in heaven, my beautiful wife and my late grandmothers who helped shape me into who I am today. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t think of them and I’m always conscious of the fact that I have their blood running through my veins, which is why I always try to make them proud.
I’m not sure about you but I was a little freaked out about last night's rogue Chinese rocket that came crashing down to earth. No one was sure where or exactly when the 21-ton remnants were going to land. It was like the rocket was telling the game Russian roulette, "Hold my beer." Fortunately, it landed in the ocean off the coast of the Maldives and no one was injured.
ICYMI: Great News for International Travelers Great news for international travelers! The CDC just announced that international air passengers traveling to the United States can use a self-test (home test). There are certain criteria that need to be met so be sure to read them carefully.
You can buy at-home COVID tests here on Amazon. I plan to travel with this empowerDX COVID-19 test, which was sent to me by the company. There are some comments on the product listing saying that the test labs aren’t open on weekends, meaning travelers can’t get their results back in time but I checked in with the company directly, which confirmed the following: “Yes [the test] meets the CDC guidelines for international air travel and yes our lab is open weekends. Average turnaround is 48 hours with the majority of results received in 24 hours.” Full story here.
There’s a ton of travel news this week and I shared plenty of tips to help make your travels (or planning) smoother, cheaper and happier. So let’s go!
Last-Minute Mother's Day Gifts If you haven't bought your mother or wife a present yet, then let's just hope you're in Hawaii and she's still sleeping. My wife created a Mother's Day Gift Guide and most of the items would make a great present any time of the year but especially for travelers.
One of my wife’s favorite things is her Shipt membership. She can have things delivered straight to our front door within an hour from a variety of local stores like Target and CVS. It’s a great time-saving service when you’re too busy to go out and is also great for the elderly. I wish my mom had this service growing up because as a busy mom with four kids, she really would have appreciated it. Get $10 off with code fbt7d or click this link.
The Gadget Every Flight Attendant and Frequent Traveler Packs I'm working on a Father's Day gift guide, which will be ready by next week but one of the items that will be included is something that every flight attendant and frequent traveler keeps in their carry-on bag: A portable charger because you never know if your plane will have a power port that works and who wants to sit around in an airport anymore? I mentioned Nimble on Leo Laporte's show The Tech Guy and he says he approves of it because it's eco-friendly and is made with all the best parts. However, it's kind of expensive even with my $10 off promo code so here's another one that's more reasonably priced by Anker.
