Earlier in the pandemic, younger and less-tenured workers were the main catalysts of The Great Resignation, but new data suggest the movement is evolving to include older and more tenured professionals resigning despite a looming recession and continued inflation. There doesn't appear to be an overarching reason why this is happening, but some observers have quipped that this stage of the The Great Resignation is something of a "great midlife crisis."

The number of job openings rose to a new record high of 11.5 million in March, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, up from 11.3 million in February and above the previous record of 11.4 million set in December. The number of workers leaving their jobs also reached a new monthly high in March at 4.5 million as the US job market continues a hot streak that has seen more than 400,000 jobs added monthly over the past year.
