I can’t help but feel sorry for some of the Formula 1 drivers pounding around in Portimao today. Although they’re surely having an amazing time, driving the fastest-ever F1 cars around a great racetrack, for some their futures are in grave doubt.

Yesterday, we learned Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen won’t be on the grid with Haas F1 next year. Not a huge shock, after a poor 2020, but these are two quality drivers who’ve proved themselves worthy of their place on the grid.

Now, consider that George Russell – one of my standout performers of the year – might lose his drive at Williams. Sure, it could be for Sergio Perez, who absolutely deserves a seat someplace, but imagine Russell being forced off the 2021 grid?

That doesn’t seem right at all.

Acting Williams Formula 1 chief Simon Roberts refused to confirm George Russell and Nicholas Latifi will both stay for 2021, but says “nothing has changed” with the team’s driver plans.
