December 2017/January 2018 | 24th Edition Working for integration

Dear Stakeholders

The festive season is upon us and we can already feel the slowing down. The HDA has in the past quarter of the financial year been focusing on project implementation of the government-led catalytic projects that are on the 2017/2018 financial year horizon. Also during this quarter we presented our Annual Report for the past financial year - 2016/17 - to the Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements. I am pleased to share with you as stakeholders that again the Agency has received an unqualified audit.

Minister launches John Dube Village Mega City project in Ekurhuleni

The John Dube Mega City Human Settlements Project forms one of government’s 31 Gauteng integrated human settlements projects that are expected to collectively yield over 500 000 housing units upon completion. It is expected that the projects, which involve all spheres of government (national, provincial and local) as well as the private sector, will be completed over a ten-year period.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development on the 27th of September hosted the Social Infrastructure Sum­mit, a gathering of stakeholders from the human settlements sector aimed at seeking alignment between the department’s infrastructure planning and the Provincial Strategy Framework of Transformation, Modernization and Re-industrialization (TMR).

The HDA meets with contractors to upscale delivery

In an attempt to upscale the delivery of human settlements in Gauteng Province, the HDA team on Friday 03 November 2017 met with all the contractors and professional service providers involved in the construction of houses in the Province. The purpose of the session was to hear contractors’ concerns and to find ways of accelerating the construction of houses in Gauteng. The Agency has an agreed target of 3455 housing units with Gauteng Province in the current financial year. Progress to date includes 2232 foundations; 1825 wall plates; 1417 roofs and finishes, and 1274 overall completions.

The HDA eyes partnership with University of the Free State

The HDA’s Free State office recently engaged with the University of the Free State’s Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences to introduce the university to the HDA’s main activities and to identify areas of mutual interest for potential collaborations and long term working relationships. This meeting was in line with the HDA’s strategic objective to become the government developer of choice by ensuring alignment between our activities as a government agency and the teachings of academia about the social housing sector.

The HDA hosts Senegalese housing study tour to South Africa

The HDA played host to a delegation of senior representatives from the Senegalese Ministry of Housing and Urban Development on the 4th of November to provide the visiting officials with a presentation of the HDA’s work and role in South Africa’s housing programme. The delegation, which was led by Mr. Yatma Gueye, Chief of Staff and Special Advisor to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development was in the country to learn about South Africa’s experiences in the delivery of affordable housing.

The development of Remote sensing and GIS has resulted in production of methods that are used for the detection of land use change whereby images of the same area at different times are compared to each other to determine land use change (Fan, 2008).
