Dear Reader,

With infection rates falling and vaccinations continuing apace, the country awaits Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown, which he will publish on Monday. From mass testing school pupils to how and when to open pubs, there are a huge number of decisions to be made. And for many people there’s another pressing question: can and should I book a holiday? Nick Trend takes a look at the situation and what actions holiday companies are taking.

One of the stranger effects of the pandemic on the economy has been the boom in house prices. Despite a record recession, British homes went up in value by 8.5 per cent, according to the Government. Should that be setting off bubble alarms? Marianna Hunt finds out whether this latest growth is sustainable and how it might end. (Would you like to hear more from our expert property team? Peak oil used to be about supplies running out – now it refers to demand. Yet, although demand may soon fall away it doesn’t mean there won't be one last spike in oil prices. A lack of investment in oil supplies could see prices hit $150 a barrel, but, paradoxically, that will be bad news for petrostates, writes Ambrose Evans-Pritchard. Read why.

Finally, Syd Barrett, the original lead guitarist for Pink Floyd, played an essential part in Britain’s rock history. Neil McCormick tells the full story of the man who gave the band their name and their breakthrough sound before LSD robbed him of his mind and his talents.
