Dear John,
This evening we’ll begin our journey back from India to the United States after an intense five weeks of travel and sharing with devotees here. Every spiritual seeker needs to come to India at least once in their lifetime, for it’s here that enlightened sages perceived the soul’s path back to union with God. This awareness lies beneath the surface of every aspect of life. India is a land of dramatic contrasts: widespread illiteracy and poverty, side by side with rich culture and learning as evidenced by the great poets, scholars, and scientists; excessive materialism and opulence, as well as wandering ascetics and hermits in mountain caves; the squalor in the cities and sanctity in the Himalayas; the mind-boggling diversity of language and culture, as well as the simplicity of God behind it all. I wish I could mentally transfer to you some of the images of India that will remain vibrant in my heart and mind: the elegant courtship dance of two king cobras as they intertwined with each other at the edge of a field; the peace and depth in the eyes of the new baby born into the Ghosh family at 4 Garpar Road; the sweetness and gratitude in the face of an elderly woman sitting next to me on a plane, when I helped her buckle and later unbuckle her baffling seat belt. Separation between individuals dissolves in shared love and service to Guru. But most of all, I treasure the moments when all separation between individuals has dissolved in shared love and service to our Guru. With gratitude to God for these experiences, I see the melting softness in the eyes of devotees whether in Delhi, Gurgaon, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, or Mumbai. It is to all of you whose lives have touched ours that we humbly bow and offer our deep appreciation and prayers that God reveal Himself to you. In the words of our great Master, Paramhansa Yogananda: “There is an invisible cord which binds East and West and all strangers. Let the Eternal Song echo through your mortal flute, and it will become immortal.” May the Song of God forever echo through all of our hearts, until no other sounds remain.
