Girl's Home Goes Back to the Beginning

By: Bill Sherry, Girl’s Home Houseparent

From June 4 thru June 8 the girls were privileged to join with IGNITE youth group from Trinity Church.  A short 6-hour van ride to Potters Ranch in Union, KY allowed us to enjoy great accommodations, activities, and food.  More importantly, we were 30 minutes from The Creation Museum.  Talk about back to the beginning.  This was a tremendous comparison of creation and evolution.  One of the exhibits allowed us to walk through creation up until the flood.  Another exciting venue was the Star Gazer Planetarium.   This look into creation clearly shows the awesomeness of God, the order in the universe, and how small our planet really is yet we are chosen by the Creator of it all.

Tyler, a boy's home resident from June 2016 until September 2017, shared his testimony about his time at The Joy House at the June 21st Jasper Optimist Club Meeting where he stated "I spent a little over a year there, and I’ll be honest, it was the best thing that ever happened to me." His entire testimony is available on our website and you can view it by clicking HERE. Thank you, Tyler, for your willingness to share your story. We are so proud of you!
Boy's Home Takes on Helen, GA

By: Robert & Ethan, Boy's Home Residents

The first week of June our home had the opportunity to go to Helen, GA. We were able to do many action packed activities during our few days in Helen. Our first day started with checking in to our wonderful cabin and enjoying as much swimming as we could stand. We should have listened to Mrs. Kristen when she told us to wear sunscreen because we all felt the heat of the sun the next day!
That first night we had a delicious dinner at Bigg Daddys Restaurant and had some awesome wings! After dinner we went downtown and toured the local shops and tasted amazing fudge and other yummy treats at a pretty cool candy store. The next day, we headed to the Helen Tubing and Water Park and rode the same two slides a thousand times. It was a blast! After that, we had the opportunity to watch Mr. Nick almost drown as we tubed the Chattahoochee that afternoon.

Counselor's Corner - Parenting with Connection before Correction

By: Darren Lane, Director of Residential Therapy

Try not to punish the relationship when trying to correct the child. I had a chance to see an example of this not too long ago. The situation was a well-known, typical scenario: a teenager broke a rule. It wasn’t the breaking of a life-threatening rule, such as drinking and driving, or doing drugs, but it was a case where the teen knew better and had been warned. The adult in this situation stated what rule was broken, and after the attempts of the teen to minimize and mitigate, stuck to her guns and issued the consequence. No lecture. No yelling. No “how many times do I have to tell you?” It was a beautiful thing. A little while after the consequence was given, I saw the mom braiding the teen’s hair. Correction was issued, but the relationship remained intact and a high priority.

Wednesday, June 13th, many of you heard our Executive Director, Steve Lowe, Girl’s Home resident, Leighanne and her dad, Dave,  share on the FaithTalk LiVE with Rick and Dan radio show how The Joy House has been used to change their lives for the better. The show started with lots of laughs as Dave was teased for being overdressed by the casually dressed hosts being told “somebody didn’t get the no suit memo.” The show quickly progressed to the purpose of the program, which was to highlight The Joy House, what it is doing in the lives of girls just like Leighanne and how the community can join in to help the ministry expand to help more teenagers as it approaches its 17th anniversary of “restoring lives and families.”
