LONDON (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- The Bank of England has stopped displaying art depicting several former governors and directors after a review found they were connected to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Oil paintings and busts of seven leading figures at the central bank between 1698 and 1814 James Bateman, Robert Bristow, Robert Clayton, William Dawsonne, Gilbert Heathcote, William Manning and John Pearse have been removed after it was established they had links to slavery, the bank said in a statement Friday. The move was the latest in a difficult reckoning taking place at museums, galleries and long-standing institutions in Britain and other European countries that have begun reframing their exhibitions to more explicitly acknowledge links to slavery and colonialism. Criticism that many had not done enough escalated after the Black Lives Matter protests around the world last summer following the murder of George Floyd by a police officer in the United States. NEW YORK, NY.- David Richard Gallery is presenting Altered Landscapes by Michael Namingha, a Native American artist of the Tewa-Hopi tribes from Northern New Mexico in his first solo exhibition with the gallery. The presentation includes seven new photography-based artworks that address climate change and the resulting manmade alterations to the landscape using images from two specific locations in New Mexico and a novel process for printing and presenting the images. The images are manipulated and segmented into blocky structures with bisecting and overlapping planes of varying color values. The resulting digital chromogenic prints are mounted with the face of the image to the backside of shaped and strategically angled Plexiglas that relates directly to the blocky internal shapes. This process takes the photograph out of a purely ... More

Leonardo Drew (American b. 1961), CPP4, edition 2/15, 2015. Aquatint with flatbite etching, 23 1/2 x 17 1/4 in. Collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer.
MIAMI, FLA.- The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU will present Leonardo Drew: Cycles, from the Collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, from Sept. 1 until Nov. 17, 2021. Drew transforms cotton paper pulp and pigment into powerfully large yet fragile prints that test the versatility of the medium. Some resemble maps of geographical landscapes like populated cities, forests, and urban wastelands viewed from above, while others are reminiscent of the night sky and distant galaxies. Evocative of fire, soil, sky, and water, there are strong perceptions in both microcosmic and macrocosmic scale. Organic forms within the composition undulate with various textures and luminosities, pushing the boundaries of its materiality. Much like his sculptural installations in wood, Drew starts with a raw material, transforming and reconstructing its essence until it resembles debris. ... More

SALZBURG.- Traps are defining elements in the art of Andreas Slominski, both in a figurative and a literal sense. His new works include a series of motifs drawn from historical greeting and playing cards, which the artist edits, enlarges and transfers to poster sheets produced by the German company Begeisternder Wahlkampf (Captivating Campaign). Originally intended for exaggerated or even lurid political messages, the election poster is repurposed using sentimental images that invite the viewer to discover hidden poetry in the mundane. Slominski started working on the reproduction of postcard motifs onto larger formats as early as the mid-1990s, but was never quite satisfied with the print result. The latest developments in the field of printing technology, which allow for a much higher quality, prompted ... More |

It was something that we talked about because it happened at the projects behind my elementary school, the director said. So, for me growing up, Candyman was real. He wasnt coming from a movie. It might sound like the naive belief of a young girl, but when you reconsider the brutal back story of Candyman a 19th-century Black male artist who was murdered by a mob of white men for falling in love with a white woman the legend feels startlingly real. Its one reason DaCosta revisited that story with the new Candyman, ... More |
