  1. Repair damaged or missing tiles on your roof
  1. Clear gutters and downpipes of leaves and blockages
  1. Put away or tie down any loose items such as outdoor furniture, toys and trampolines.

What can I do on my verge?

Verges are Crown land and under the control of the City. As such, there are certain things you can and cannot do on your verge to ensure it remains safe, accessible and looking good. The following are allowed although prior approval must be sought.
  • Fruit and vegetable planters
  • Street furniture
  • Play equipment
  • Hard surface treatments - fake turf and paving is restricted to 25% of the verge and subject to a street tree being located on the verge.
The City encourages all property owners, managers or residents to maintain the verge, including mowing, mulching, pruning, weeding and maintaining any approved structures.

What is not allowed on your verge?
The following is a list of the common mistakes in relation to verges. These practices increase the risk of injury to people and pets and liability against the property owner. They also damage City resources and may result in repair costs being passed on or fines issued to the property owner.
  • Removing footpaths and kerbing
  • Cubby houses
  • Placing non-compliant items on the verge – e.g. skip bins, sea containers, letterboxes, fences, barriers, loose materials like gravel, or inorganic materials
  • Plants or weeds over 600mm high (causes  line of sight restraints)
  • Cacti or spikey plants
  • Metal stakes or star pickets
  • Limestone blocks or bricks along the kerb.
From the date of notice, a property owner can be fined up to $500 a day until the offending structure is removed.

Ross River detected in Cockburn

Ross River virus has been detected by the Department of Health in mosquito samples from Thomsons Lake Nature Reserve. The samples were collected by the City’s Environmental Health team.

The unseasonal virus activity was likely the result of high levels of rainfall, coupled with above-average temperatures which created conditions that favoured mosquito breeding.

How can I protect myself?
  • Avoid outdoor exposure, particularly at dawn and early evening
  • Cover up with long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing when outdoors
  • Repel by applying an effective personal repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin evenly to all areas of exposed skin and always follow the instructions on the label
  • Remove water-holding containers from around the home and garden to ensure mosquitoes do not breed in your own backyard
  • Screen all household doors and windows.
