How a viral blackface video brought threats and harassment to a community hundreds of miles away
On Tuesday evening, a school in Eagle Mountain, Utah, racked up more than 1,500 calls, 3,000 emails, countless Facebook comments and an ocean of threatening texts, voicemails and private messages in response to an incident that happened 230 miles away in Cedar City, Utah, on Halloween.
It’s not clear how the rumors that led to this harassment started, but the school, Cedar Valley High School, bears a similar name to Cedar City or Canyon View High School located in Cedar City. Nevertheless, students at the school have reportedly been afraid to go outside, been harassed and one student’s identity was stolen to create a social media account that apologized for the incident.
Not only is the race for the Senate heating up, the price tag is going up as well. In 2020, the 4th Congressional District Race between Rep. Burgess Owens and then Rep. Ben McAdams cost a hefty $23 million including outside spending.
With Super PAC spending flowing freely into this race, as well as Lee’s $9.7 million and McMullin’s $5.8 million, this race is on track to being the most expensive in Utah’s history.
