Sixty years after her death, Marilyn Monroe is back in the limelight.

Kim Kardashian stunned millions when she channelled Monroe at the annual Met Gala earlier this year.

The reality TV star walked the red carpet in a piece of American history, the crystal-embellished gown Monroe famously wore while singing Happy Birthday, Mr President to John F Kennedy in 1962.

In addition to Kardashian's reignition of one of Monroe's most iconic moments, the late Hollywood star is also the subject of the buzzy Netflix biopic Blonde.

Based on the bestselling, semi-fictionalised book by Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde – which premieres at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday – is a dark retelling of the iconic actor's life that lifts the lid on the trauma and fierce intelligence behind the bubbly, sexualised image of the time.

Remembered as one of Hollywood's eternal stars, the years since Monroe's death have painted a more complex picture of the actor and singer, who was objectified as the definitive "blonde bombshell" pin-up.
