When Brady and Andrea Murray met their son Cooper — a four-year-old boy abandoned on a street corner in Tianjin, China, because he was born with Down syndrome — they felt like they had hit the jackpot.

Now, the Highland couple has made it their life’s mission to match families with kids with Down syndrome and other special needs through their full-time charity RODS Heroes.

The lost art of civic virtue

In his youth, George Washington came across a manual of 110 “Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation.” It was a French etiquette book based on Jesuit writings from 1595 that helped shape the future founding father’s character. Among the rules, it gave sage advice such as, “Speak not evil of the absent for it is unjust,” and “Show not yourself glad at the misfortune of another though he were your enemy.”

According to Lynn G. Robbins, these virtues have become a lost art in public life, saying, “It is imperative that we return to our roots of civility.”
