Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman wants to run his jail again and late Tuesday night asked a federal judge for permission to do so. Gusman, who for years has chafed under a 2013 federal consent decree that brought in court-appointed monitors to oversee jail operations, essentially says those monitors are wasting millions of tax dollars in a quest to make a “jail utopia,” Matt Sledge reports. Gusman, in his 44-page petition, says the standard instead should be the “constitutional minimum.” Jail utopia vs. constitutional minimum. This will get interesting. Here's Matt's story. All that – and more – in today’s Lunch Line. As always, thanks for reading. And don't forget to wash your hands. |
