While you're eating lunch, get your fill of today's biggest news so far.
with Jerry DiColoHi everyone, On Thursday Gov. John Bel Edwards gave word Louisiana would move to Phase 3 and Mayor LaToya Cantrell said New Orleans would be staying put in Phase 2. Today, we're finding out what those decisions mean for residents, businesses and (of course) football. Jeff Adelson has a report from City Hall and the mayor's morning press conference, where Cantrell, Health Dept. Director Jennifer Avegno and other officials laid out how fans can — and can't — cheer on the Saints on Sunday. Everyone with a grill and an ice chest ought to give it a read. Cantrell also said Saints fans won't be allowed back in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for the Week 3 game against the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 27. And NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson warned residents that police will be issuing citations for large crowds. Gov. Edwards is expected to provide details on what a Phase 3 reopening will look like outside of Orleans Parish later this afternoon. In other news, an unfortunate milestone: 5,000 people in Louisiana have died from coronavirus, and The Times-Picayune — in partnership with ProPublica — investigates a link between COVID-19 deaths and air pollution. We also have new details on a terrible shooting Thursday night that left three people dead. In Slidell, Archbishop Gregory Aymond led a procession and Mass for the 40th anniversary of Pope John Paul II Catholic High School. Photos here. Check out these stories and more news, sports and entertainment on NOLA.com, brought to you by The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate. Stay safe and have fun this weekend, JD |
