Good morning, happy Saturday, and welcome to the July 6 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. Let's have a little chat about the Saints offensive line, shall we? An OL overhaulThere was a quote from the NFL's annual owners meetings this spring by Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh that I've thought about often this offseason: "If I asked you the question, what position group depends on no other position group to be good, but every other position group depends on them to be good — what position group is that? Offensive line," Harbaugh said. "They're not relying on any other position group to be good, but yet every other position group relies on the offensive line to be good." It's a great explanation for why it's so important to get everything right up front. It doesn't matter how good your skill players or your quarterback is if you don't have a functioning line in front of them. And, a great line can elevate all the players who will be on your fantasy teams. The Saints are ... well, who knows? They've got a lot of youth on their starting five right now. Some of them have been very good, some have not and some are completely unproven. At tackle, my colleague Matthew Paras zeroed in on Trevor Penning, who is currently penciled in to be the starting right tackle with Ryan Ramczyk's future being extremely cloudy. As Paras said: "That’s a bold plan. Penning gave up four sacks and 10 pressures in six games before he was benched last season. By moving the former left tackle to the right side, the Saints and Penning believe the switch is going to benefit them in the long run." Time will tell if they're right. Things are more settled on the interior, where the Saints have two longtime starters in center Erik McCoy and right guard Cesar Ruiz. But the left guard, Nick Saldiveri, is almost a complete unknown at left guard. I take a look at the interior here. The offensive infrastructure should be a little more conducive to better offensive line play this year, but just how good that unit is at adapting to the new scheme could say a lot about how far the Saints can go. Breakout candidatesThis was a fun podcast to sit in on: Which Saints players may be in line for a breakout season in 2024? I put together the main list, focusing on players who are 25 or under (as of this writing) and have a chance to elevate their profile this season. For some (like Kendre Miller), that should come with regular playing time. For others (like Rashid Shaheed) that means turning in true No. 2 receiver numbers. The Saints Insider crew got together to offer our insight on these players (and a few more) for our latest podcast. Thanks, as always, for y'all's support, and enjoy the weekend!
