Good afternoon. It's been a long week, and we're taking a moment to help you catch up on any non-coronavirus news in Maine you might have missed. Here's what's happened:

Maine Audubon project hopes to prevent turtles from being turned into roadkill

  • In nature, turtles can live past the age of 100, and they’ve been on this earth for more than 200 million years. But some species have been threatened by a comparatively much more recent threat — getting hit by cars on the roadways.

That’s why Maine Audubon seeks volunteers for the Maine Turtle Roadkill Survey, to find stretches of road across the state that have a high risk of turtles being victims of roadkill. The data collected will be shared with the Maine DOT, which then tries to incorporate ways to assist with passage, such as crossing signs and fencing.
Man wounded Sunday in Millinocket shooting dies of his injuries
  • Cameron Pelkey, 23, of Millinocket died overnight Wednesday into Thursday at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Jason Mulligan, 45, was charged with aggravated attempted murder and is being held at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor. He is expected to be charged with murder now that the victim has died.

At 91, this Maine man lives to sing Irish songs and dance on the bar

  • When his wife, Joanie, died in 2006, Joe Grace didn’t know what he was going to do with himself. That’s when an Irish pub opened up just around the corner in Bath. Since then, it’s become his second home, filled with friends who feel like family. But Grace, now 91, doesn’t go there for the booze.

He goes to sing Irish songs. He has to. “It keeps me going,” Grace said. “It’s why I’m still here, I think. I live for it — it’s happiness, I guess.”
Eddington girl suffers serious burns in brush fire
  • A 12-year-old Eddington girl was seriously burned Monday morning as a pile of brush was being burned in her yard on Jarvis Gore Road. Investigators believe that the girl likely poured a flammable liquid onto the fire, which ignited her clothing.
Washington County gains new 400-acre preserve, including prized fishing spot

  • Downeast Coastal Conservancy recently acquired more than 400 acres surrounding Vining Lake, a body of water that has long been a fishing and paddling destination for residents of Washington County.

The land trust has designated the new property as Vining Lake Community Preserve, and will immediately begin work on improving public access for fishing, paddling, hunting, hiking and other low-impact recreational activities.

Former Maine high school basketball rivals to become UMaine teammates

  • The last time Matthew Fleming and Wol Maiwen squared off in a serious basketball game, both players proved unstoppable.

Fleming scored 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and made four 3-pointers to lead Bangor past Edward Little of Auburn 56-52 in the 2019 Class AA North championship game. Maiwen countered with 23 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots while keeping the Red Eddies close.
