The Front Page: Trends in St. Tammany, New Orleans East; the Ray Brandt estate case; and a falling bullet hits a child

By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor

TRENDS OF TIME: Two tales of evolution.

  • Even with a 13% population gain in the past decade, St. Tammany Parish's growth is slowing. It's no longer the fastest-growing parish in Louisiana, only the fourth fastest. Vast swaths of virgin timber and rural scenes still abound, to be sure, yet some who have moved to the north shore think it's "becoming what Metairie was 30 years ago.”
  • In sprawling New Orleans East, carjackings and fatal shootings have skyrocketed since 2018, especially in the Little Woods area, causing concern for former and current residents and complicating the East's prospects for economic development. Yet it takes police twice as long to respond to emergency calls there than it does in the rest of New Orleans.

WHERE THERE'S A WILL ... : A state appeals court has breathed new life into a legal challenge to the last will and testament that auto sales magnate Ray Brandt signed weeks before his death in 2019, cutting out his widow, Jessica Brandt, from control over a two-state empire of dealerships.

THE COST OF CELEBRATIONS: As fireworks and gunshots exploded on New Year's Eve and into early 2022, New Orleans public safety officials logged six structure fires, four people waving guns and a 10-year-old wounded by a bullet falling from the sky.
