with Chad CalderIt's human nature to ascribe significance to particular numbers, and it's a tendency that admittedly can get a little out of hand. But with the relentless tally of sickness and death during the coronavirus pandemic, it seems worth noting that Louisiana just surpassed 1 million vaccinations just a few weeks shy of the one-year anniversary of first case of COVID-19 being diagnosed in the state. Health reporter Emily Woodruff has a look at how we got here, what it means and what comes next. We've also got a piece about how vaccines have played a role in cutting coronavirus cases in nursing homes, which have been hit disproportionately hard by the coronavirus. Also on Monday, the Archdiocese of New Orleans warned local Roman Catholics that the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine is "morally compromised" and should be avoided, if possible, in favor of others vaccines because of its connection to abortion. The Archdiocese is also in the news due to a court deadline for people to file claims against the local Catholic Church alleging they were sexually preyed upon by priests and deacons when they were children. Monday's deadline drew another 50 people making such claims. We've also got the latest on an incident at Desi Vega's steakhouse in Metairie, where a server and a manager put an automatic 20% gratuity on a Black couple's check and lied to them, saying it was restaurant policy. It was only after the couple did some investigating that they were able to prove there was no such policy, and the incident shed light on the fact that racial profiling cuts across all aspects of daily life. There's all that and much more in today's Front Page. We thank you, as always, for joining us. CC |
