As we near the last week of Ramadan, some of us observing this special month, are looking for a different way to end our fast.
Yes, the lentil soup, cheese sambousek, hummus and kibbeh are undeniably delicious. The Ramadan tents and cute outfits are amazing. And the Middle Eastern sweets for a little sugar rush post-iftar hit different – when else is it socially acceptable to eat this many katayef in one sitting?
But if you've had 21 days of traditional foodie experiences, let me fill you in on where I've had one of the most fun and unconventional iftars in Dubai recently.
In this city, popcorn and soda are the bare minimum snacks you get at the movie theatre. Not only can you order all kinds of popcorn flavours (shout out to the Cheetos mix), but here, we have proper full-service menus, too.
From cold and hot starters to actual mains (like literal lobster ravioli), plenty of desserts and, most importantly, silverware.
That is how we roll in Dubai. 💅
Your best bet is to book a 6.30pm movie – VOX Cinema's THEATRE is a good option for foodies. Then, arrive 20 minutes early, order your food, pick your popcorn and take your seat in possibly the comfiest cinema chair ever.
Start with a Caesar salad (which comes topped with crispy beef bresaola) and a side of French fries (IYKYK). Pairing both with a portion of fried akawi cheese is also an excellent shout.
If you're a serious eater, get the seared scallops to start and the chicken, mushroom and saffron risotto as your main. Oh, and your food is delivered straight to your seat.
Round it all off with a full-fat Fanta slushie, a big bucket of popcorn and you've got yourself a cosy and filling iftar.
What about you? What's your favourite alternative iftar experience in Dubai?
