Every other year, the Olympics become the talk of the town, turning hitherto unknown athletes into beloved household names. Here’s a way to get ahead of the curve. Check out our primer on the most root-worthy Toronto athletes parachuting into Paris this week.

“WE NEED MORE STUPID”

Early in the pandemic, Boman Martinez-Reid went from TMU student to TikTok sensation. As Bomanizer, he delighted millions with parodies of Kardashian-inspired reality TV tropes and, as a result, got signed to the same agency as Beyoncé. Now, on his series Made for TV, he’s making the transition to a (slightly) bigger screen and sending up the most audacious character of all: himself.

WHO EARNS WHAT

After the actors’ and writers’ strikes of 2023, TIFF’s bad year got worse when core sponsor Bell pulled out. A $23-million cash infusion from the federal government should help staunch the bleeding. It’s unclear how much CEO Cameron Bailey is making, but according to 2021 CRA records, there are two people earning more than $350,000 at TIFF—Bailey’s got to be one of them.
