The Mortgage Bankers Association reports a drop in mortgage applications for the last week in February as rates moved higher. "Data on inflation, employment, and economic activity have signaled that inflation may not be cooling as quickly as anticipated, which continues to put upward pressure on rates," MBA economist Joel Kan said.

The Federal Reserve's first interest rate hike of the current tightening cycle was imposed in March 2022 as tackling runaway inflation became a top priority for the central bank. Though inflation has cooled, it remains well above the Fed's 2% annual target, and strong job numbers and consumer spending signal further rate hikes are imminent. Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari on Wednesday said Fed policies are "having the desired effect of tapping the brakes on the economy," but acknowledged more work must be done to finish the job.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has prohibited mortgage broker RMK Financial from further participation in the mortgage lending business and fined it $1 million. The CFPB alleges in part that the company, doing business as Majestic Home Loan, deceived military families with false implications of having governmental endorsement of its home loans. The action was the CFPB's second in a week against a nonbank lender alleged to have targeted military families.
