'The old SNP is back and pressure is mounting on Nicola Sturgeon'

It’s safe to say that the elections to the SNP National Executive held last week didn’t produce the outcome the leadership had been seeking, argues Kenny MacAskill in our opinion section today.

The nationalist MP and former Scottish Justice Secretary says in no uncertain terms, "The old SNP’s back."

Scotland's ruling party continues to be divided into Nicola Sturgeon and Alex Salmond camps, and Mr MacAskill believes " it’s on independence where pressure will really mount" for the leadership.

He writes: "As the UK lurches to disaster, pressure to make the election the mandate to hold a referendum irrespective of a Johnson veto or making the election itself a referendum is mounting."

The Scotsman has won the Innovation of the Year prize at the British Journalism Awards for The Scotsman Sessions - a series of video performances recorded by Scottish artists during the coronavirus pandemic and released on scotsman.com, with introductions written by Scotsman critics.

So much work has gone into supporting the Scottish performing arts scene during the pandemic, it's great to see the hard work of our arts team being recognised.
