I always forget that Pioneer Day is NOT a national holiday, so I was shocked when a friend reminded me that most people have work today. Reader, I was speechless.

Sometimes, the holiday seems uniquely Utahn, but I’ve always felt that having a pioneering spirit is one of the foundational principles of our country. I love the countless ways to celebrate that illustrate this like the Native Celebration in the Park, the Days of ’47 Parade, visiting new pioneer monuments and of course going to see the fireworks!

Tell me: How did you celebrate Pioneer Day and what are your traditions?

Why America needs Pioneer Day this year more than ever

The pioneer story is about more than people walking across the plains in handcarts and covered wagons. The early settlers in Utah also walked the fine line between individualism and community. As we face global challenges today, their example can help us have the perseverance, grit and strength to lock arms and move forward.

He’s a pacifist, but he’s doing all he can to keep Ukraine combat ready

Back in February when Vladimir Putin sent 200,000 troops marching into Ukraine, Utahn Jason Stout and his family locked up their home, packed what they could and drove to Romania where they could catch a flight to Utah. Inspired by the regular citizens in Ukraine who have stepped up to protect their country, this peacenik who has worked for Catholic Charities and the Peace Corps stepped forward to help the people of Ukraine.
